SUMMARY:SAAC: "The Viewfinder" Photography Competition
DESCRIPTION:Submissions are due Tuesday\, January 27\, and the exhibition will be open to the public from Monday\, February 2 through Friday\, February 27. A public reception and awards announcement will take place on Thursday\, February 12\, from 5:30 to 7:00pm. \nThe Diamond Agency\, in conjunction with The El Dorado Insider\, is once again sponsoring the competition. This year’s Sponsor’s Purchase Award theme\, “America 250\,” invites photographic interpretations celebrating our nation’s 250 years of freedom and the enduring spirit of patriotism within Union County. The winner of the “America 250” Purchase Award will receive a $250 prize\, and their work will be featured in The El Dorado Insider. Additional cash prizes include $500 for Best of Show\, $250 for First Place\, $150 for Second Place\, and $100 for Third Place. All winning entries will also be considered for publication in the quarterly magazine. \nSAAC will welcome celebrated documentary and architectural photographer Philip Gould\, of Lafayette\, Louisiana\, as the judge for this year’s “Viewfinder” photography competition.

DESCRIPTION:The South Arkansas Arts Center (SAAC) will present “Pichwai Art\,” a debut exhibition by artist Manasi Desai\, on view in the Lobby Gallery from February 3 through March 1. An Artist Reception will be held on Thursday\, February 12\, from 5:30 to 7:00pm. \nDesai’s exhibition centers on Pichwai art\, a traditional Indian painting style that originated nearly 400 years ago in Nathdwara\, Rajasthan. Renowned for its intricate detail and vibrant color\, Pichwai art most often depicts Lord Krishna and scenes from his life\, particularly his playful interactions with cows and the Gopis (milkmaids). The term “Pichwai” is derived from the Sanskrit words pichh (back) and wai (hanging)\, referencing the large cloth paintings traditionally displayed as temple backdrops. Historically\, Pichwai art has served as a devotional form of worship and remains an important visual tradition within the Pushtimarg sect of Vaishnavism\, while also conveying stories from Indian mythology and literature.
