Job Description

This position is governed by state and federal laws and institution policy. This Instructor is responsible for the instruction of EMT classes. Other major responsibilities include, but are not limited to, participating in department and college-wide meetings. This person will work under the supervision of the EMS Program Director regarding instructional duties.

  • Job type: part-time, Fall and Spring Semester, 15 hours a week
    • This position requires day, evening, and weekend hours.
  • Salary: $30 per hour
Supervisory Responsibilities:

None

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Essential function
    • Teach EMT coursework.
    • Provide instruction through in-person and distance education formats.
    • Provide clinical supervision.
    • Complete master and course syllabi for assigned courses.
    • Excellent communication and documentation skills and ability to integrate new technology in instruction and skill lab settings.
    • Assists EMS program director and may coordinate skills lab and scheduling as requested.
    • Assist with completing, organizing, and maintaining documentation of the evaluation of students’ clinical performance progression. Assist with oversight of students’ progression in clinical experiences.
    • Retain and remediate students, as appropriate, for student completion of EMT classes.
    • Ability to work with a variety populations.
    • Ensures program compliance with Arkansas Department of Health, Section of EMS & Trauma Systems Rules & Regulations, and the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician certification in National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician testing.
    • Interface and work with program and institution faculty and staff.
    • Assist and work with EMS and SouthArk faculty as needed or directed.
    • Interface and work with community and clinical partners.
    • Maintain professionalism within their specialized field, including currency and required certifications and credentials.
    • All other tasks as requested by the program director and division dean.
  • Non-essential functions
    • Recruitment of students for EMS programs.
    • Advise non-program students regarding program requirements.
    • Provide EMS academic support for community partners.
  • Travel
    • Local and regional travel to community and clinical partner facilities.
    • Local and regional travel to off-campus educational/learning experiences.
    • Drive EMS Program ambulance during educational experiences.

Job Requirements

Skills and Abilities:

  • Skills
    • Basic computer skills needed to use a learning management system and Microsoft Suite products.
    • Be able to perform EMT patient assessment, monitoring, and intervention management techniques.
    • Manipulate, operate, and maintain typical equipment used in EMS.
    • Communicate verbally and in written methods with an interdisciplinary healthcare team, administrators, patient, and care partners.
  • Abilities
    • Knowledge of current EMT theoretical and practical professional information.
    • Knowledge of current ethical and professional standards for field of EMS.
    • Perform multiple tasks within a classroom, laboratory, clinical practicum site, ambulance, and other typical emergency medicine spaces within one work shift as well as over a long-term period of time.
    • Executive functioning skills needed to identify, analyze, and complete complex learning and EMS related situations.
    • Executive cognitive functions to plan, organize, teach, and evaluate students both in didactic and clinical situations.
    • Emotional regulation to manage self and multiple situations within a short period of time and maintain self to complete tasks and duties over an extended period of time.
    • Teach others with various learning styles and instructional needs.
    • Ability to work in:
      • Classroom, skills laboratory, ambulance (stationary and moving), simulation laboratory.
      • On and off campus buildings, inside and outside spaces, clinical affiliation agencies, public community areas, emergency vehicles.
      • Physical spaces, inside and outside, with numerous and complex activities and situations, as well as with numerous individuals.
Required Education and Experience:
  • Technical Certificate in paramedic or related allied health field (such as respiratory, radiologic technology, surgical technology, or nursing).
  • Must be a licensed EMS instructor, or have the ability to secure this license within three months of hire.
  • Minimum two years experience in emergency medical services.
  • Current, active, and unencumbered state license and national registration as an EMT.
  • Possess knowledge of the curriculum and about the program’s evaluation of student learning and performance.
Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Associate degree in paramedic from an accredited institution of higher education recognized by the U. S. Department of Education.
  • Must be a licensed EMS instructor, or have the ability to secure this license within three months of hire.
  • Three years experience in emergency medical services as a paramedic.
  • Current, active, and unencumbered state license and national registration as a paramedic.
  • Academic coursework particular to anatomy, physiology, and biology.
  • Possess knowledge of the curriculum and about the program’s evaluation of student learning and performance.
Physical Requirements:
