DESCRIPTION:Tinker Time for Kids:  Dinosaurs or Diatoms:  What’s in the Oil? \nSaturday\, February 15\, 2025 \nStarts at 1:00 pm \nMicroscopic plankton or gigantic dinosaurs? Did oil come from one of these creatures\, both\, or maybe neither one? Investigate the origins of oil and learn how oil came to be found in south Arkansas. With the help of the curator\, explore the geology gallery in the museum\, and see a working pumping unit and a reconstruction of a 1920s oil derrick in the Oil Field Park. This program is designed for children ages 6-12\, but all are welcome. Adults are required to remain with their children during the program. Please contact the museum at (870) 725-2877 to reserve a place for your child in the program.

This report and many others marked the start of one of the largest petroleum booms in the history of the nation. Discover the stories of the South Arkansas Oil Boom and the oil field workers known as roughnecks\, as you explore the Oil Field Park and the outside exhibits with the museum curator. Learn how at first the boom brought chaos and danger\, but eventually change and new opportunities to the region. In the event of inclement weather\, a tour of the Boomtown Street gallery in the museum will replace the Oil Field Park Tour.

Summer Tinkering offers hands-on activities and a chance for kids to discover our local heritage and get the most out of their summer break. We invite you out to the museum for Summer Tinkering. Every Thursday in June and July (June 6th\, 13th\, 20th\, 27th and July 4th\, 11th\, 18th\, 25th) from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Join us for construction\, simple machines\, electrical circuits\, coding\, and more!! These free programs are for ages 4 and up (younger siblings also welcome) with a beginner or higher skill level. Registration is required. DESCRIPTION:Looking for some fun ways to celebrate the solar eclipse that’s coming on Monday\, April 8th? Join us at the Arkansas Museum of Natural Resources for some after-school SOLAR ECLIPSE STEAM programs the week before the eclipse. These programs have us using Technology\, Engineering\, Art\, and Math to help us better understand the Science behind a solar eclipse.  There is no charge for these programs. Programs available will be for tinkerers of all ages. \nSunday\, April 7th at 2:00 p.m. \nSolar Eclipse STEM: Make an Eclipse Viewer (Pinhole Projector) \nIn case you can’t make it out for the Friday program\, we are bringing it back on Sunday\, April 7th at 2:00 p.m. It is not safe to look directly at the sun without taking precautions to protect your eyes. The sun is far too bright to view directly. But as we get closer to the eclipse\, on Sunday\, April 7th\, we will be tinkering with a creative way to “view” the eclipse.  Join us for pinhole projectors at the Arkansas Museum of Natural Resources on Sunday\, April 7th at 2:00 p.m. Make your own eclipse viewer!
