Power of the Purse fundraiser set for April 20

Posted on April 10, 2023

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS-TIMES

It sounds almost too good to be true – free books for children in Union County, Arkansas.

To support childhood literacy and the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, the United Way of Union County will host Power of the Purse at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 20 at the Granite Club in El Dorado.

The Power of the Purse will feature a fashion show from local merchants; a silent auction, which includes designer purses and other items; and heavy hors d’oeuvres and adult beverages. Entertainment will be provided by Mason Halstead.

Individual tickets for the event are $40. In addition, tickets for a raffle of a Kate Spade designer purse are also available for $5 each. Tickets can be purchased online at eventbrite.com by searching “Power of the Purse El Dorado.” A sneak peak of auction items can be found at facebook.com/UnitedWayofUnionCountyAR.

Thanks to the Dolly Parton Imagination Library and the United Way of Union County, children under the age of 5 years can now have access to their own library where a book is mailed to each enrolled child every month until their fifth birthday. There are currently more than 1,450 children enrolled in the program, according to the United Way, and the organization is looking to raise funds to continue to advance the program.

“A big thank you to our sponsors: MCSA Auxiliary, El Dorado Service League, Shari and Steve Terry and Mary Pat and Aubra Anthony,” said United Way of Union County director Alexis Alexander.

All proceeds from the event will directly benefit United Way of Union County’s early literacy initiative – the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. The book program is offered to families at no cost. Parents can register their eligible children online at imaginationlibrary.com .
