Job Description

Job Summary: The Upward Bound Program is an early intervention pre-college program that helps students prepare for higher education. Upward Bound brings high school students to college campuses after school, on the weekends, and during the summer to receive instruction in core subject areas. The Upward Bound program is seeking applicants for part-time Academic Instructors in areas of English, Science, and Foreign Language (Spanish). These positions are responsible for delivering basic skills instruction and supplemental college preparatory coursework in summer components. The Upward Bound Instructor is responsible for preparing materials; developing instruction strategies, teaching basic skills and core curriculum courses; and evaluating student progress. They are role models, sharing expertise and experiences with participants and maintain required records. Summer Instructors must be able to commit for 6 weeks and work well with staff at all levels within a cultural, collaborative environment. This is a grant-funded position and governed by state and federal laws and institutional policy.

Compensation: $25 per hour.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Instructors will report to the Upward Bound Director and manage needs in the classroom during Upward Bound sessions.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Create an engaging grade level appropriate course curriculum for each course taught.
  • Effectively implement curriculum developed for each course to include utilizing a variety of teaching techniques.
  • Revise and/or create subject specific lesson plans aligned with UB's academic summer program theme.
  • Select materials for themed designed courses based on UB staff recommendations.
  • Develop and submit lesson and assessment plans.
  • Deliver courses geared towards generating excitement for learning, as well as developing concrete academic skills in UB participants.
  • Design and facilitate project-based learning experiences that enable students to demonstrate their understanding of the summer curriculum through a culminating project.
  • Provide course content in a manner that helps UB participants to have a head start on their upcoming fall course work (for Math, Science, English only).
  • Maintain order in the classroom (in-person or virtual), monitor, record, and report students' performance on a weekly basis.
  • Provide appropriate classroom management (in-person or virtual) for 9th-12th graders.
  • Maintain student records in a secure and confidential manner.
  • Complete formative and summative evaluations for each student in class(es).
  • Provide feedback on students’ performance via quantitative or qualitative methods.
  • Attend UB staff orientations, weekly meetings, and post-summer meetings.
  • Supervise and monitor students during class.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies, incidents, or student concerns, following established safety and reporting protocols.
  • Provide support to the Upward Bound program, when necessary
  • Adhere to all College policies and procedures.
  • Other duties assigned.
Skills and Abilities:
  • Must possess strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication.
  • Exceptional organizational skills.
  • Proficient computer skills, including familiarity with the Microsoft Office, as well as other computer applications.
  • Ability to build rapport with youth.
  • Demonstrates a considerate, friendly, respectful and constructive attitude toward fellow employees and students.

Job Requirements

Required Education and Experience: Upward Bound Instructors must hold a bachelor’s degree in the field they teach; have at least three years or more secondary or postsecondary teaching experience with students similar to Upward Bound participants.

Preferred Education and Experience: Knowledge and experience with alternative learning techniques effective with diverse learners preferred.

Physical Requirements: Prolonged periods of standing, walking and sitting; with occasional lifting up to 20 pounds.
