The visual arts committee of the South Arkansas Arts Center is now accepting artwork submissions for the 2013 Juried Art Competition. Entry deadline for the Smackover State Bank sponsored competition and exhibition is May 31.
David Houston, director of the newly created Bo Bartlett Center in Columbus, Georgia, will serve as juror for this year?s competition. The exhibition will be on display in the SAAC galleries from July 8 through August 23. An artist reception and awards presentation of $2,000 in cash prizes will be hosted on July 27 at 6:00 .pm.
The competition is open to all two dimensional or three dimensional artists, 18 or older, in the United States. All styles and media are welcome; traditional and alternate media, as well as innovative and experimental approaches accepted. Notifications of acceptance into the competition will be announced on June 11.
"Judging a show like the one at SAAC is a form of research and an enriching opportunity to work with a community of artists grounded in place and common concerns," says Houston.
Houston has nearly 30 years of experience as a curator, professor, and public art administrator. The Bo Bartlett Center will be the fourth institution he has helped develop and open. Most recently, Houston led a curatorial team at Crystal Bridges in Bentonville, Ark. His work there included the installation and premiere of the permanent collection. He served as chief curator at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans from 2001-2010 and co-director in 2011.
All submitted pieces must be original and completed in the last two years. Artwork completed under classroom supervision and/or reproduced from work by other artists or published material is not accepted.
