The Promise provides graduates of El Dorado High School with a scholarship covering tuition and mandatory fees that can be used at any accredited two- or four-year educational institution in the US. Since its inception, over 4,800 students have attended 199 universities in 39 states—some even reaching top institutions like MIT and Cornell. What makes The Promise so rare also makes it worth understanding. Here’s what you need to know.
Any student who has been continuously enrolled in the El Dorado School District from at least October 1st of their 9th grade year through graduation is eligible. The longer a student has attended, the larger the scholarship benefit.
The Promise covers up to the highest resident tuition at an Arkansas public university, and that amount can be applied to regionally accredited colleges and universities across the U.S.
The scholarship covers tuition and mandatory fees. It does not cover room, board, books, or personal expenses.
Yes, students may apply The Promise funds to private or out-of-state institutions as long as they meet accreditation requirements, up to the equivalent tuition cap set by the highest tuition rate at an Arkansas public university.
Continuous enrollment is the only requirement – there’s no separate application process, making it easy and accessible for families.
The program is funded by a $50 million gift from Murphy Oil Corporation and continues to be sustained through endowment growth and strategic oversight.
The Promise itself is not refundable, but it is a “first-dollar” scholarship, which means it is applied before other types of aid. This works to the student’s advantage because if you also receive grants or scholarships that are refundable, those funds are more likely to remain untouched and returned to you. For example, while the Promise covers tuition, fees, and other university-invoiced items, your other aid could then be refunded to help with personal expenses.
